Considering nobody was born to be a technican, here are some tips to help those that have limited technical knowledge or skills.

If you are using a laptop, you may access Internet via a wireless network. To ensure the wireless connection starting from you laptop is secure, please check the connection from the wireless icon at the bottom right corner of your screen, where the System Tray locates in. This connection should be secured. The look is similar to the following screenshot:

Checking Point 2: Password to Access Router from Local
Try to type "http://192.168.x.1" in your Internet Explorer's Address Bar and press 'Enter', where 'x' is 0, 1 or 2 for most home routers, depending on the brand and model of your router.

As usual, you will be asked to enter user name and password.

Check the default username and password from th user's manual. If it works, please change the password to avoid the settings in your router to be changed without your permission.
Checking Point 3: Remote Management in Router
Until your router is managed by a third party remotely, or you want to manage your router while you are not in your home or small office, this feature should be disabled.

The above tips are very practical to protect yourself. As for the the steps to find the options in your router, they are diverse in different brands and models. After you try and you feel difficult, ask a technician for help.
