From time to time, a security breach from a big well-known company, like Sony, becomes a top line news. As much as we know, there are at least 10 Massive Security Breaches before. Sony’s security breach may be the biggest personal data heist in history - almost 77 million PlayStation Network users, may also 24.5 million users of Sony Online Entertainment will be affected.
Maybe you are lucky and none of the breaches affects you. But do you know what will happen tomorrow? Even though Sony is a big well-know companiy, to protect its sensitive information is a challenge. What can we do to protect ourself as an individual? More and more people cannot live without digital life. Each of us has to take personal responsibility.
In fact, the most important and realistic tool on hand is password. Because it is the widely used and simpliest method for authentication and authorization. In other words, we can live without passport, but cannot live without password. Especially, password is the last ditch for information security in most cases, when the Email used for login as an user name is public.
So, the stronger your password could be, the better informatin security you have. Fortunately, some websites integrate with a verification feature to indicate the strength of your password when you create a new account. If such a feature is not available, please remeber the following essential criterias for a strong password:
- Be long enough, at least up to 8 characters/digits as usual;
- Be easy to remember by yourself, but hard to be guessed by others.
Furthermore, you can learn how to create a strong password by test from here.
Last but not least, let us make complex simple: information security affects not only you or me, but also all other people have contacts with you or me. To enhance security can be easy but not simple. For higher level or full security, please contact a consultant.
