Cost is always the key point for businessman to consider before making decisions in business. There is no exception in online backup, which need to pay per month for online space and service.

Comparing to local backup, online backup has unbeatable cost-effective features. In order to reveal the power of online backup system, I did some interesting tests with BitWay Online Backup version 4.5.5.9.

Test 1: Online Space Used Will Not Be Simply Doubled Along With Increasing Copies

One of advantages of BitWay Online Backup is unlimited versioning. This feature is great for any file that need to be modified very often and keep its history. In this test, I prepared three files, A, B and C, to create a single .zip file with different size and simulate the change of a file. Whenever there is a change in a file, this file is backed up to the cloud and a new version is generated. The test result is listed in the table below:

.Zip File Online Backup Version Files in Test.Zip Test.Zip Size (KB) Total Online Space Used
1 A 775 1MB
2 B 1550 2MB
3 C 2324 3MB
4 A+B+C 3099 4MB
5 A 775 4MB
6 A 775 4MB
7 B 1550 4MB

Thanks to the smart versioning system, the online space used only increases if there are some differences detected by comparing a new version with all other existing versions. In this test, the online space used remains in 4MB for 7 versions. Redundent data will be remove automatically. In local file system, to keep all versions need to save all 7 copies with different file names, which need over 10MB local space in hard drive. Obviously, BitWay Online Backup system is good at saving online space and save money.

Test 2: Backup OnlineĀ  vs. Compressing All Files In Local

To compress files in local can also save local space. So, I did another test to see who use less space. Similar to Test 1, I prepared another three files, A, B and C, to create a single .zip file and backed it up to cloud one by one. The result is in following table:

.Zip File Online Backup Version Files in Test.Zip Total Online Space Used
1 A 3MB
2 B 4MB
3 C 5MB

Three files saved in online backup system need only 5MB space. However, in local file system, all three files compressed into a single .zip file still need about 6.4MB space in total.

The facts speak for themselves. Anybody is welcome to repeat the above tests and verify the results.

A well designed backup plan will integrate both online backup and local backup, and offer great benefits with affordable price.
